Botox has been used for years by the medical community to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and facial creases. Botox is a brand name given to the toxin created by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium. Other brand names include Dysport and Xeomin.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox creates a barrier between the nerves and muscles. The muscle that is treated with Botox cannot contract. This causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.
Botox is commonly injected in forehead lines, lines around the eye, and lines between eyebrows. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity, however, cannot be treated with Botox. Botox can also treat lip lines, the chin area and corner of the mouth and neck.
How Is Botox Administered?
A Botox procedure only lasts a few minutes and does not necessitate anesthesia. It is injected with a thin needle into muscles and causes minimal discomfort. It normally takes three to seven days to show its effect. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol starting at least one week before the procedure. Taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications is also discouraged two weeks before treatment. This helps reduce bruising.
How Long Do Botox Effects last?
The Botox injection will last three to four months. As muscle contraction gradually resumes, the lines and wrinkles begin to form again and need to be treated. Overtime, the lines and wrinkles may appear less because the muscles learn to relax.
Are there Side Effects associated with Botox?
Temporary bruising is a common side effect of Botox. Headaches, which only last one to two days, can also occur. However, this is rare. Very few patients may develop eyelid drooping. This is also temporary and ends within three weeks. Drooping usually happens when the Botox moves around. It is important not to rub the injected area for 12 hours after the procedure or lie down for one hour after the procedure.
Who Should Not Be Treated with Botox?
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological ailment, you should not get Botox. You should instead consult with a doctor who can recommend alternative treatments.
